Why every company should have access to a Mental Health First Aider

Every company will have a physical first aider, or access to one, but what about a Mental Health First Aider? Mental health has become prevalent within the workplace, but many employees feel they cannot talk about the subject, they won’t be supported or they will be seen differently.

Did you know that:

  • Mental ill health and stress are costly to employers - £30 billion annually through lost production, recruitment and absence (ACAS)

Stats from MIND:

  • More than 1 in 5 employees have called in sick to avoid work, when asked how workplace stress had affected them

  • 14% have resigned and 42% have considered resigning, when asked how work place stress affected them

  • 30% felt they would not be able to openly tell their manager they felt stressed

  • 56% of employers would like to do more to improve staff wellbeing, but don’t feel they have the right training or guidance

What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid is the mental health equivalent of physical first aid.  We now have a Mental Health first aider who is able to provide a telephone support for you and your employees.

Why should your company have a Mental Health First Aider?

Mental health is a growing concern both in terms of wellbeing and cost to industry (as indicated above), with Mental Health being the single largest cause of disability in the UK.

Mental Health First Aid can:

  • Reduce sickness absence days and costs

  • See an improvement in your employee’s wellbeing and productivity
